# Objectivity and Critical Engagement By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2022-10-12 Objectivity has been socially engrained in us as an essential value for science and by extension analysis. Despite its derived benefits, such social construction is asymmetric and potentially problematic. Peter Sloterdijk explained in his _Critique of Cynical Reason_, that “it is not the basis of elevated, distanced critique that achieves grand overviews but a stance of extreme closeness – micrology. If things have become too close for [[comfort]] for us, a critique must arise that expresses this discomfort. It is not a matter of proper distance but of proper proximity.” It might be most constructive to simply take a moment of silence, perhaps over coffee, to not overthink the implications of this for one’s work, critical engagement, and action. #### Related Items [[Objectivity]] [[Science]] [[Analytics]] [[Critique]]
