# Not It By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2022-11-27 Data and analysis cannot fail - it is not in their nature. Data exists because you decided that it exists. The decision to accept the data's existence allows for it to be collected and studied. The value of the data in terms of success and failure has everything to do with you and nothing to do with it. Analysis follows the same path. It exists because you decided that it exists. The value of any analysis outcome is in the eyes of its creators and critics. Thus, when we say data and analysis are failing in business, we aren't talking about the data or the analysis. We are talking about the failure of data and analysis to address people and their values, decisions, and anxiety. Analytics as a profession is failing to will the data and analyses into existence that consider these human factors. We look at a problem at an atomic level, ignore psychology, belittle philosophy, think our job is about the numbers, and assume away inconvenient and challenging beliefs. In short, we are living in a mechanical world and we are mechanical "its." Being an "it" has some advantages. Analysts as "its" cannot fail, just like data and analysis cannot fail. However, "its" are disposable - a means to an end. If you desire to be disposed of after use, continue being an "it." If you aspire for anything more, don't be an "it" at work or anywhere else. Will into existence the data and analyses to address the human condition of the problems in front of you as a me, I, we, and us. #### Related Items [[Analytics]] [[Organizational Analytics]] [[Management]] [[Crisis]] [[Psychology]] [[Creative]] [[The Human Condition]]
