# Learning About Business By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2022-12-20 If you are an analyst within a business, it pays to read about and be familiar with all the popular business methods, tactics, and fads. The fundamentals of business are not hard to learn. If you are a self-starter, pick up any book on business and start reading. If you need extrinsic [[motivation]], a business school could be right for you. However, highly rated business schools are not as much about learning as making connections. Choose wisely because your return on investment will vary greatly. As you learn about the basics and the latest fads, you'll quickly see patterns and themes. Leadership and management, marketing and sales, mission statements and values, etc. If you read and learn about these business ideas critically, you'll eventually stop pursuing them because often the latest thing is just repackaged ideas with slight nuances. So, do not worry about never being able to catch up. You'll get there. Once you've got the basics, fads, and core business texts locked away in your brain, now is the time to use them in your daily work life and analysis. Begin to speak the language of business and use the jargon to show you are part of the tribe. Position analyses within these business frameworks to elevate your work and make deeper progress. After some time, you'll be seen less as an analyst and more as a fellow business professional. At this point, you'll have a choice to make. Do you continue to climb the ladder, or do you point to the flaws in the business systems and ideas? Are you an analyst and organizational critic, or have you been captivated by business? Maybe you want to start your own business and operate differently. Why not try both? #### Related Items [[Analytics]] [[Business]] [[Learning]] [[Thinking]] [[Management]]
