# Is This Any Good? By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2023-03-10 The pursuit of quality haunts every serious endeavor. When one invests oneself in one’s work, one wants to produce a product of value. Often one wants to be recognized for the work in the short term and be promoted based on the accumulation of one’s superior performance. Determining if one’s work is good is challenging. One can be too close to see it objectively. However, this does not mean that the organizational hierarchy can assess it better, although obviously, their assessment is consequential. Those in power may lowball the assessment because they want to keep an employee at a given level. They may not understand it. They could even resent that a person subordinate to them in the hierarchy is better. For any number of reasons, the assessment of the quality and value of one’s work is difficult to assess. Given the complexity of answering this question, it might be advantageous to ask a couple of others. Is accomplishing this work enriching? Does this work contribute to my personal growth? Since these two questions are inwardly focused, the person doing the work is the authority of the answer. In the pursuit of quality work, one benefits from assessing what the engagement with and production of that work does to the quality of one’s life. Some work situations are toxic. Some work is drudgery. Answering the important question of “is this any good?” is broader than focusing on how one’s work is received by those in power. It includes also how it shapes or constrains our life, freedom, and growth. Find and cultivate good work. #### Related Items [[Power]] [[Quality]] [[Assessments]] [[Life]] [[Growth]] [[Value]] [[Work]]
