# Great Job! Here's More Work!

A popular adage attributed to Benjamin Franklin goes, “If you want something done, ask a busy person.” The implication is that someone with a reputation for working hard will be more willing to take on additional work than someone who does not share the same reputation. To further expound on this notion, someone with a track record of successfully producing quality work will be more apt to continue delivering quality work.
In the workplace, those with a reputation for completing quality projects ahead of schedule are often rewarded with extra work. Sometimes this additional work is accompanied by a promotion, but typically it is not (or at least not quickly). Some employees enjoy the fringe benefits of this extra work, such as recognition, rewards, or extra face time with management. Over time, however, extra work can lead to burnout. Many employees will reach a point where the benefits no longer outweigh the additional expectations, especially when they compare themselves to their colleagues for whom the employer holds lower expectations but offers similar titles and pay. It is important, therefore, for employers to ensure that expectations stay aligned with titles and pay—and vice versa.
