# Frightening Statistics By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2022-12-05 Some things are not frightening until they are known. When crossing a wobbly rope bridge, you might only fear falling to your death when you learn how high up you are. Here the advice is don't look down as it will steady your nerves. As the saying goes in the world of *1984*, ignorance is bliss. However, other things are frightening because they are unknown. For example, what's hiding under the bed? We don't know without looking, and not knowing is frightening. Anything could be under there - our imagination runs wild. Statistics is the third thing that is frightening regardless of knowing about it. If you don't know about Statistics, you might be frightened by it because of it's technical nature. But you should be frightened by how it is used to manipulate everyday situations. If you know about Statistics, you should be frightened by how easily it is used to justify anything under the sun. Beware statistics - with great power comes great responsibility. #### Related Items [[Analytics]] [[Statistics]] [[Knowledge]] [[Fear]]
