# Finding Solidarity at Work By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2022-11-21 Work is easily an [[Absurd]] notion and meaningful pursuit. The universe is vast, and your work will be lost no matter how important you are now. You are delusional if you think otherwise. We only need to know the first 38 digits of pi to calculate the size of our galaxy to within a centimeter. Yet, we have toiled to calculate trillions of digits of pi. This is perfectly absurd. People intentionally dedicated their energy to this pursuit despite the meaningless of it all. To these pi-enthusiasts, this is a great feat that they know has no purpose. Yet, it brings them joy and creates a community of solidarity. The biggest difference between this pursuit and the work that most people do 40+ hours a week is not the meaningless part, but the joy and solidarity part. Virtually no organizations provide meaning and solidary to their employees in reality or artificially via institutional [[goals]]. People may be able to find joy in their meaningless jobs via mindful reflection, but solidarity is not something you can do on your own. Solidarity and community are elusive unless intentionally designed for within an organization. Simply saying we are a community does nothing. Just take a look around and see if it's working. Work is absurd and meaningless, but you can find joy on your own. Solidarity against the absurd is needed to combat the human condition and the pointlessness of it all. It's much easier to stay sane [[together]] than trying to keep in touch with reality when all you have is your own thoughts. Because of this sign me up for the endless calculation of pi - at least there is a community that gives a shit. #### Related Items [[Purpose]] [[Solidarity]] [[The Human Condition]] [[The Myth of Sisyphus]] [[Business]] [[Community]]
