# Excitement About the Future

Established routines can be both comforting and boring. When one is forced to confront the unknown, there can be renewed excitement about the future. Whereas one can never really know the future, routine makes it seem like one can. One potentially squanders day after day going through the motions. Then something changes. Or many things change. Change can be good. It can encourage growth and development. It can provide new eyes to see the world. It can offer an opportunity to do more. To contribute. To try. Doing any of these things requires energy and focus. Routines tend to stifle both. Change offers an opportunity for great authenticity in one’s existence. Perhaps it takes time to imagine and fashion a new way of being. There is always tension between being and becoming. New routines will emerge and form the sediment of identity. There is a flux between the forces of change and consistency. Any conscious action taken toward the unknown future is a commitment. It reflects one’s hopes and values. Embracing the radical freedom of the unknown can be liberating. Change forces an awareness of action that is too easily ignored under the comfort of routine.
