Tests can be nerve-wracking. If one is unprepared, there can be a feeling of inadequacy. If one is prepared, there can be a feeling of excitement. Facing and overcoming a challenge can be highly rewarding. For those who do well on examinations, this can become a cycle of motivation and reward as one studies and prepares to do well on tests, motivating one to study harder and longer to do even better. Sometimes tests are set up as a means of assessing the level of one’s understanding. These are typical. Other times, there are thresholds established for passing. Sometimes the threshold is as low as 70% to 80%. Other times it is as high as 100%. These can be especially challenging as these examinations are often based on multiple-choice questions. People vary in their preparation and performance. At the time of the examination, all one can do is do one’s best. This is true independent of the amount of preparation one did leading up to the exam. The ill and well-prepared alike can only do their best at the moment. Exams teach us how to prepare, deal with stress, and deal with outcomes. They can also direct us along paths that shape and constrain our employment and identity. Sharpen your number two pencil and get out your bluebook; the next examination is right around the corner.
