Is it a paradox to enjoy the unenjoyable? It could be. Perhaps it is the sign of a warped mind. Either way, there is a benefit to those who work to find a way to enjoy the unenjoyable. Work is filled with tasks and moments that are unenjoyable. Work has so many unenjoyable things that if one allowed things to be what they are, one would likely not enjoy work and, therefore, would not enjoy much of one’s life. Such a situation is intolerable. Finding a way to enjoy the unenjoyable, however paradoxical, is the only rational response to such an intolerable circumstance. There are a few things that can assist in this endeavor. Cultivating an appreciation for the absurd goes a long way. Much of what occurs at work is absurd. Confronting the absurd will likely either be a source of frustration or amusement. Solidarity can also help. Knowing that one is not alone provides comfort and perspective. Lastly, one can focus on the quality of one’s work. Producing quality as an end rather than a means makes one an artist. As the adage states, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Intolerable things should be resisted and overcome rather than endured. But not all unenjoyable banalities call for revolution. Learning to enjoy the unenjoyable is not a retreat from engagement. It is how one conserves one’s energy to engage in effective resistance when it matters most.
