Humans learn things in a variety of ways. In discussing learning, distinguishing between education and training is often beneficial. It is easiest to define training as it is focused on learning how to do something. Education is broader than training. It encompasses things like acquiring facts, acquiring rudimentary knowledge, and developing the power to critique and reason. Each form of learning has its place. In organizations, it is not uncommon for there to be executive education. When these events occur, the focus is more beneficially placed on the context rather than the material. Executives likely already have a strong foundation of education and training. The executive education session is about taking time from daily responsibilities to reflect on an important topic. It is often beneficial for these events to be in an environment away from work without devices connecting one back to the office. If the purpose is to be able to think effectively about a given area of focus, distractions are not helpful. Many executives will not allow themselves to believe that they can take this time away. It’s good to take time to think. Executive education sessions are just about the only time they truly can.
