# East versus West Coast Vibes By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2023-04-05 There are two opposed workplace vibes. Let's say the east coast vibe is one of execution and working hard to reap promised rewards. Conversely, the west coast vibe is one of doing good work, but the promised rewards are not the focal point - it is far from it. The west coast vibe works to live, while the east coast vibe lives to work. When you put these two groups into the same room, you get different responses to organizational problems. Strong east coast factions form and complain about the west coast not being realistic, business savvy, committed to the organization, etc. And they have some valid points. Businesses need to make more money than they lose, but the west coasters ignore this to enjoy the good times of now. The problem is that now is fleeting, and everyone might all be out of a job if things continue with the overly carefree attitude. The west coasters believe they'll find another job soon enough, but that doesn't stop the carnage of now from happening. The point of the east coasters is that the carnage is avoidable if people just cared as they did. On the other side, west coasters form social cliches but not factions. It's not in their nature to get too involved in organizational politics because work is just a thing that pays the bills. Their self-worth is not tied to work, so it's hard for them to get invested enough to build a faction within a company. However, the west coasters also have many good points about work and being. In the end, you have the east coasters building strong political coalitions against the west coasters who struggle to organize into anything but ask questions that shake the entire foundation of the east coast belief system. Both sides talk past each other, and progress is rare. Which side do you belong to? Might I suggest being a south coaster? See both sides and come up with something better. #### Related Items [[Work]] [[Beliefs]] [[Paradigms]] [[Metamodernism]] [[Organization]] [[Business]]
