There is an element of complexity to modern existence. In terms of both work and life, we are bombarded with information and expectations. It can be chaotic and stressful. In such an environment it is helpful to have a strategic approach for not just getting through it, but for thriving professionally and being personally fulfilled. One of the most essential things one can do is prioritize one’s commitments and then execute tasks consistent with one’s prioritization. There are a variety of ways people do this. Some make “to-do” lists. Some build complex mathematical models. Wherever along that spectrum one operates there is great value in understanding and living one’s priorities. As the saying goes, when everything is important, nothing is important. Prioritization is how one knows where to focus and for how long. A certain sense of clarity and peace comes from this. Organizational analysis allows institutions to accomplish something similar. In fact, the ability to develop coherence and strategic alignment of organizational priorities is one of the most essential contributions applied analytics can make. Making these prioritizations explicit is doing something great with organizational analysis. It allows people to see and understand how they contribute to the mission, that in turn provides a basis for the sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing one’s work is meaningful. Analysis is more than making correct calculations. Analysis is about clarity and understanding. Establishing this with organizational priorities allows for alignment, coherence, and efficiency. Do something great; allow analysis to inform the collective understanding of organizational priorities.
