# Depth Through Reflection

Regardless of cognitive awareness, humans are always trying to find a purpose and make sense of the world around them. The unfortunate thing is people are unaware that this is driving them, so they lack depth in whatever they are pursuing. Let's not make any judgments about what they are doing or what they are into. That being said, ethics and our humanity should be considered and observed. Therefore, I will judge you if your purpose is to be an asshole. However, even if your purpose is to be an asshole and you are unaware of your actions and intentions, your assholeness will be shallow. You won't be able to answer why you are doing it or whether you are getting better at it. For example, take a person who lives their entire life for sports. They grew up playing and watching sports, and now they cry when their team loses. They revolve their entire life around intermural sports and when the game is on. But, they are clueless as to what is driving them to do this. If you ask them why, you'll get something like "it's always been important to me." Imagine if this person had reflected on their humanity, purpose, and actions. They may still be huge sports fans and do all the same things, but they'll look different to outside observers. Actions will look intentional, and relationships will soften. In a word: authenticity. It's hard to say why this happens, but it does and greater depth is reached.
