# Democracy is Complicated

Democracy isn't as straightforward as most assume. In a pure democracy, the person with the most votes gets elected to the position. This is thought to represent the voice of the people, but it only represents the voice of the largest voting block. First, only some vote, so it's hard to say whether their voice is represented. Second, when there are more than two candidates, there is a good chance that the winning candidate only represents the voice of over a third of the people who voted. In fact, in many cases, most voters are not represented as the votes for all the losing candidates are greater than all the votes for the winning candidate. All of these dynamics are well-known within political science and mathematics. This knowledge isn't recent but extends back thousands of years. Alternatives have been proposed, but compromises are always made and there are always ways to game the system. All models are wrong, but some are useful. But, there are other issues with democracy as a system beyond just voting methods and representation. If the person elected represents the people of a region, they should adjust their personal views to match those of the people they represent. Suppose everyone in their district suddenly switched from liking ice cream to cookies. In that case, the democratic leader should also switch their perspective, even if it goes against their ideology and preference. Is this what we expect from our politicians? In some ways, they switch perspectives all the time. We call it flip-flopping and view it as negative, but perhaps it's what they are incentivized to do within a democracy. A political leader who maintains their views regardless of the people's will either fail to be reelected, convince the people to change perspectives, or reject the people's will outright. When one remains in power and denies the will of the people, one becomes a dictator. Democracy is complicated, and one must be careful when critiquing changing sentiments and what one means by representing the people. Corruption is always lurking around the corner. The devil is always whispering on our shoulders; if we fail to consider why, we fail to make good decisions in solidarity with human progress.
