# Decorating the Office By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2024-06-11 What one places in one’s office likely conveys something. Hauling stuff requires effort. Sometimes, what decorates one’s office are gifts or awards from those within the organization. These are likely there because they were awarded at the office, they are work-related, and one does not care enough about them to haul them home. However, assuming one’s office has some personal items, one must bring them to the office, which requires a degree of effort and selectivity. These tchotchkes likely serve one or two purposes. They likely are things one enjoys, and they are brought into the office for personal enjoyment, or they are a means of communicating something to those who come to the office. In short, they are either for oneself or for others. Maybe both. The items might be sentimental, comedic, or esoteric. Often, they serve as a starting point for a conversation. Either the person will like it or be intrigued by it and want to know more. This is an opportunity for authenticity and connection. This can be even more immediate and profound when books are part of the office décor. If one examines the books on the shelf and finds one of shared influence, this can be all it takes to form a friendship. In the virtual office, the aperture is narrowed to that behind the person on the screen. This requires even more selectivity as the visible office has been reduced by at least 80%. How a person stages that prime real estate conveys a great deal. Decorating the office is less about style than communication. Observe and discuss. #### Related Items [[Decoration]] [[Office]] [[Relationships]] [[Communication]] [[Meaning]] [[Effort]] [[Intention]]
