# Declarations

The Declaration of Independence is one of the founding documents of the United States. As beautifully written as it is, when it was sent to the King of England, the King didn’t respond by acknowledging that the colonies were now free. His response was more like, oh yeah, we will just see about that. And war ensued. That’s the funny thing about declarations: they are dramatic and generally convey a position, but they are only insofar as other people agree or can be compelled to accept them. People prone to making broad declarations tend to be blowhards. In the short run, they may be effective. In the long run, the approach indicates a lack of ability to convince or coordinate activity toward a desired end. Organizational declarations are sometimes expedient, but seldom do they last.
