# Consistency of change

At a high school, there was a teacher who left the school a month before the end of the semester. The teacher was quickly replaced by another educator who was at least equally competent, and life went on. It did, however, present an interesting predicament when the new teacher was tasked with creating a final exam for a course in which they personally taught a minor portion of the material covered.
Roughly half the questions on the exam pertained to material taught by the new teacher—a percentage unequal to the amount of the semester the new teacher was present. A quarter of the questions covered material the new teacher assumed was taught by the original teacher. The last quarter of the questions were essentially extra credit questions that asked things such as, “What road is our school on?” with choices including “Main Street,” “Mars,” and “Other.”
Similarly, employees often experience management changes during a year, and it can lead to arbitrary assessments when it’s time for performance reviews and salary decisions. One potential solution to this common issue is to ensure employees’ performance reviews are based on measurable, trackable metrics that remain consistent over time.
