# Connection Over Content

Analysts are frequently myopically focused on the content of their analyses. This focus can become close to an obsession. Each number is verified and crosschecked. Each methodology is painstakingly compared and selected. Results are verified and discussed to ensure the interpretations are consistent with the findings. In short, the analytic content from start to finish is meticulously reviewed for any hint of error. The connections within the organization, however, are largely ignored. There is a benefit in placing connection over the content. This isn’t to say that content isn’t important or that one should lower one’s standard of analytic rigor. It is simply to say that the generation and execution of analysis are enacted in and through a social network. These human connections are important for mutual understanding and action. When in doubt, focus on connections first. Through these human connections, one will gain an enriched understanding of the problem, what is needed, and what is reasonable for implementation. Again, this isn’t an either/or decision. One doesn’t have to lower standards to prioritize connections. In fact, prioritizing connections, while not increasing rigor, will likely make one’s analysis more effective. Ultimately that is what matters organizationally.
