# Beep Beep, or Working Creatively Within Restrictions By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2024-03-11 Jobs are restrictive. One cannot say or do whatever one wishes in one's job. The restriction of jobs is not surprising as jobs exist within restrictive societies, and many gladly accept certain restrictions in exchange for security, safety, and camaraderie. One may struggle to come up with a definition of a society that is not restrictive. Additionally, organized restrictions may be one of the most succinct definitions of a society. So, does it follow that jobs are also organized restrictions? In many ways, the answer is yes. In the set of 'organized restrictions,' jobs are just more restrictive forms of society. When one has a job as a cashier, one is restricted from playing the piano while on the job. However, within most societies, both actions are permitted. These restrictions define much of our perceived existence, and most industrial education systems are training people to work effectively within established restrictions. Examples include standing in line, respecting authority, following instructions precisely, and getting rewarded for correct answers. While most never challenge these restrictions, considering whether the benefits outweigh the costs is a worthy exercise. If one decides the costs are not worth the benefits, one can choose to leave one's job and society. But, many forget the other side of this analysis: are the costs and benefits any better without a job or society? For some, it's worth leaving these organized restrictions, but for many, it is not worth it. So, one finds oneself stuck unless one considers the restrictions to be the boundaries of the playground. Never doubt human ingenuity to creatively play within whatever restrictions are provided. A lot can be done within the organized restrictions as the restrictions will always be finite, but options within those restrictions are infinite. Most societies and employers will decide not to like some of these actions and will choose to create more restrictions to control the situation. Thus, one enters the game of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, where the Coyote keeps trying to make more rules and elaborate plans to catch and restrict the Road Runner. Eventually, all the restrictions will blow up in the form of a revolution or jubilee where new restrictions will be formed, and the process will begin again. #### Related Items [[Work]] [[Authority]] [[Organization]] [[Society]] [[Revolution]] [[Respect]] [[Rules]] [[Subversive]]
