# Analysis Spurs Action

There are different ways analysis can spur action. A common practice is for analysis to inform senior decision-making. Under this approach, those in charge are presented with analysis, a discussion is held, reflection takes place, and a decision is made to do something different. This aspect is so common that almost no other way is considered. There is, in fact, another important way analysis spurs action within organizations. Sometimes, analysis reveals suboptimal performance within the organization. Perhaps an area isn’t really doing what would benefit the organization. This department might not know that “it” should be done. The department might not know “how” to do it. Or the department might not want to do additional work. As analysts find a way to improve organizational performance within that department, those within the department are often spurred to action. They might rush to “get ahead” of the analysts to show “they are already doing this or that.” This subterfuge fools few people. Plus, it doesn’t matter. If the focus is on improving organizational performance, this late scramble within a department to do what they should have been doing already is okay. Better late than never.
