# An Astrologer's Moment in the Sun

Oh, the illusive linkage between terrestrial events and human affairs. Humans have long sought to understand the future. Today (8 April 2024) is a major astrological event. There will be a total solar eclipse. This is a relatively rare occurrence. According to the Royal Museums Greenwich, once a place on Earth witnesses a total solar eclipse, it will be about 400 years before the next one occurs in that area. It is somewhat paradoxical that an astrologer’s moment in the sun occurs during a solar eclipse. Humans seek to understand. For all their attempts, one aspect of this endeavor remains elusive. Meaning is not inherent. This does not suggest that things can’t be meaningful, but rather that they don’t hold any meaning without an infusion of humanity. Humans make things meaningful. Without the human perspective, today’s solar eclipse would be nothing more than two celestial bodies moving in front of each other. Spoiler alert! In an infinite universe, celestial bodies constantly move in front of each other. It is only for humans that this momentary crossing holds any potential meaning. Humans might observe it fearfully at different points in time, thinking that the end of time is upon them. More optimistically, societies could view it as a harbinger of lasting peace. We might observe it more modestly and appreciate that we were alive at this particular time to see it. If the sky is clear, this will likely be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to behold. It’s mesmerizing, if not magical. As for its meaning, we might be better served to look within ourselves. Meaning is what we make it.
