# Accuracy in a Post-Fact Society By:: [[Brian Heath]] 2024-01-09 What is accuracy in a post-fact society? The answer is entirely inaccurate. A post-fact society is aware of many different perceptions and belief systems. While this has always been the case, as we know individuals who believe and see things differently, it was primarily held in check by cultural, religious, and economic guardrails. For example, God, the Queen, and Science have all been the final adjudicators of accuracy and truth. Today, society is well aware of these three entities existing all at once, so the question is, which one should we look to for the final say on accuracy? This is the making of physical and cultural wars throughout human history. Additionally, due to their historical failure, society knows the many alternatives beyond God, the Queen, and Science. People have killed millions in the name of God, the Queen, and Science, regardless of whether one believes they correctly interpreted these entities. So, it's easy to point out why one's beliefs, opinions, and perspectives are inaccurate and flawed. Enter the post-modernists who contextualize this further into the more profound flaws of humans, power, and systems. Ultimately, we land in a world where every fact can and is disputed as inaccurate according to one's "higher adjudicator of final accuracy." This may seem extreme because we continue to "accurately" build massive structures and launch things into space. These things are trivial compared to the existential crisis we face. Still, even these things could easily be denied by a significant portion of the population as being "wrong" or "not existing at all." Thus, in a post-fact society, accuracy is a meaningless illusion of certainty extending from one's existential anxiety. Focusing on accuracy is a distraction, so remove it as the goal. Instead, acknowledge it as a series of strategies one implements in the endless chess game between humanity and the indifferent universe. Positioning the pieces to continue playing is more important than pretending one can check-mate the universe in the next move. #### Related Items [[Accuracy]] [[Beliefs]] [[Metamodernism]] [[Post-modern]] [[Religion]] [[The Human Condition]] [[Existential]] [[Truth]] [[Facts]]
