# AI Isn't Neutral By:: [[Ross Jackson]] 2025-02-05 AI tools are not like tools of antiquity. Most people focus on the technological differences. These are observable but not essential. Yes, AI is more technologically complex than a hammer. But more importantly, AI can be ideological in ways a hammer cannot. Conducting a query on insubordination using Google’s Gemini resulted in ideological perspectives rather than objective definitions. The standard definition of insubordination is disobedience to authority. Further definitions are defiance of authority and refusal to obey orders. These are common and generally accepted definitions. What Gemini provided goes beyond simple definitions and provides ideologically based perspectives. Perhaps the most problematic is that insubordination includes “publicly challenging a manager’s authority” and “criticizing the company or leadership on social media.” These are not part of the definition of insubordination. They are ideological preferences of how those in power want subordinates to comport themselves. The ideological perspective provided by AI is that those without authority should be silent. Those with power do not want to be challenged, even when what they attempt to do is outside the scope of their authority; they don’t want to be held to account publicly, even when the public has a right to know. Since those in power do not always act according to the constraints of their authority and don’t always make decisions based on the interests of workers, there is a role of insubordination. Reactionaries frequently complain about how schools indoctrinate students to be liberal. Revolutionaries should understand that AI isn’t neutral. It will subtly indoctrinate society to accept authoritarian ideologies. The power that does not emerge from the consent of the people subjected is illegitimate. If those in power don’t understand that, they deserve all the insubordination that can be levied against them. #### Related Items [[Artificial Intelligence]] [[Ideology]] [[Power]] [[Authority]] [[Management]] [[Critique]]
